Sustainability Initiative

Why are we doing a digital-only program this year?

With a look to the future, the ADAA has commissioned the first-ever Sustainability Roadmap—a comprehensive guide for The Art Show, which assesses aspects of the fair that might impact climate or general wellness. This initiative aims to chart a course toward analyzing the environmental significance of such events, and by identifying short, mid, and long-term goals, to encourage greater sustainability practices going forward, not only for The Art Show, but for art fairs worldwide.

The Sustainability Roadmap was developed in collaboration with the global design and architecture firm Gensler, and ADAA’s thought partners in the initiative, AXA XL, a division of AXA, Henry Street Settlement, and Sanford L. Smith + Associates. Galleries Commit—a worker-led collective that is committed to a climate-conscious, resilient, and equitable future for New York City galleries—will provide crowdsourced tools that will enable The Art Show exhibitors to opt in to track their climate impact resulting from participation in this year’s fair, providing important data to help further The Art Show’s future sustainability goals. Once this year’s data is analyzed and the Roadmap updated accordingly, we will share our experiences with other fairs in effort to help the art fair industry generally.

The Art Show Auction to Benefit Henry Street Settlement

Henry Street Settlement is pleased to present an extraordinary painting generously donated by Tomm El-Saieh, which will provide vital support for Henry Street’s transformative programs. The work will be on view at The Art Show and will be sold in the Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Day Auction on November 17, 2022. If you have any questions about bidding on the work, please contact Ellen Schneiderman at ESchneiderman@henrystreet.org or 212-766-9200 x2260.

More information on Tomm El-Saieh

Tomm El-Saieh’s dense and rhythmic paintings derive inspiration from myriad sources, including the history of and discourse on American and international abstraction, and Haitian Voodoo traditions such as trance-induction and percussive music. Obsessive markings—notations, shapes, scratches, and erasures—saturate the surfaces of his canvases, creating fields of bursting, complex color. The synesthetic, all-over compositions that El-Saieh produces from this meticulous process are at once sublime and sensual, mystical and direct, chaotic and restrained. While firmly planted in the realm of abstraction, El-Saieh’s paintings also suggest complex networks, sprawling cities, or molecular structures, and within the clustered code of his brushwork, figurative associations emerge and recede. This compelling ambiguity in the work invites close examination and rewards continued looking. Echoing throughout El-Saieh’s work is traditional Haitian painting’s emphasis on punctuation, repetition, economy of paint application, and color sensitivity; however, he eschews the religious, political, and quotidian scenes that dominate its highly codified and narrative content. For El-Saieh, his hybridized and entirely singular sense of abstraction is a distinctly personal experience, one that is performative and experiential.

El-Saieh was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1984 and is of Haitian, Palestinian, and Israeli descent. He grew up in Miami, FL, where he continues to live and work, while maintaining close personal and artistic ties to his native country.
